Town Centre Environment
There
has been an increase in complaints from residents and visitors concerning the
problems of noise and bird droppings. Apart from wishing to discourage the
feeding of seagulls and pigeons which only encourages them to remain residents
of Bridgwater, we would like to take this opprtunity to pass on some bird
deterrent information. There are safe and inexpensive methods which prevent
pigeons and seagulls settling on their favoured roosts. These tend to be ledges
and window cill facades where they can bombard the pavements and sometimes
pedestrians below.
Flock Off and Beben are two companies
that can supply Urban Bird Deterrents in a variety of styles. The use of these
products can safely encourage birds to depart to other climes. They consist of
plastic spikes (rounded tops) which prevent the birds from roosting. Costs are
reasonable and fixing is straightforward. This can be an economical way of
solving an on-going problem. More information can be found on their web sites. www.flockoff.co.uk
and www.deben.com
More general information can be found on
the Sedgemoor Web Site www.sedgemoor.gov.uk
Sedgemoor support a policy of education, not extermination of birds in their
area. If you are interested in displaying a sign that asks people not to feed
the birds

Graffiti
Bridgwater has managed to escape the
worst of ‘graffiti vandalism’ in recent years, the visual pollution it
creates, and the associated costs of removal. Unfortunately this is no longer
the case and the appearance of graffiti is now on the increase. Sedgemoor
District Council have recently removed graffiti from several sites around
Bridgwater.
Please note that where graffiti is on
private property, removal would normally be the responsibility of the owner.
Walls etc. can be treated in order to make the removal of graffiti easier, and
therefore less costly. More information can be obtained from Graffiti Solutions www.graffiti-solutions.co.uk
Blake
Gardens
There had been a recent bout of
unprecedented vandalism at Blake Gardens public toilets and they were closed for
some time in order that repairs could be carried out. The Gents toilet has had a
significant refit and ‘vandal proof’ urinals have been fitted. Smashed
sanitary ware and lights in the ladies toilets have been replaced. The toilets
were re-opened in time for the start of the Somerfest where events were taking
place in Blake Gardens The Gardens are now looking wonderful with new
flowerbeds. Further work is planned around the Centenary Celebrations August 9 -
11.
Top marks to Harley Cook and his team at
Sedgemoor. The gardens were busy with families enjoying the Somerfest weekend
and it is hoped that increased usage of the gardens will help prevent a repeat
of this type of vandalism.
New Signs & Benches
These have now been installed at York
Buildings, Cornhill and Fore Street. If you are a business in Fore Street or
Eastover and would like a quote to be included on the new Cornhill sign please
get in touch. Other businesses interested in improving signage should contact
the Town Centre Manager to discuss requirements. The new benches have now been
installed in Fore Street adding to the enhancement of the Town Centre. The
benches have been favourably received, and weather permitting they are well
used.
