Spring 2002 Newsletter - Page 5

Reg Winslow, our Town Centre Liaison Officer at Sedgemoor District Council, is pleased to advise that new bins are on order for the High Street and Cornhill, and replacement seats and bins are to be installed in Fore Street in order to complement the existing High Street improvements.

The bins are of stainless steel construction with a black finish to include the ‘Sedgemoor’ logo. The seats are of metal construction with a black finish, which should provide for a long life span and easier maintenance. Where practicable, bins and benches that have been replaced will be utilised at other locations. The Town Centre Partnership have contributed to the cost of these new items, which will further enhance the Town Centre Improvement Scheme.

Thanks to the Police for the feedback on night-time littering problems around fast food outlets, an extra bin will be installed close to the Galleries to help manage the problem.

NEW SIGNS

A contractor has now been approved to install the new signs for secondary retailers. There are three signs and they will be located at York Buildings, Cornhill and Fore Street/King Street. We are awaiting a report from the utilities about underground pipes and cabling. Once received an installation date will be agreed during May or early June. Other businesses interested in improving signage should contact me directly to discuss requirements. I would like to apologise for the delay of this project.

W.I. MARKET

The Bridgwater Womans Institute Market is held in the town hall every Friday between 8.00 am and 11.30 am. The ladies sell homemade cakes, preserves, locally made crafts and plants. Orders and parcel service available with one weeks notice.

The River Parrett Trail, Sedgemoor District Council, Bridgwater Town Centre Partnership and Somerset County Council have appointed an artist, Michael Pinsky, to work at Bridgwater Docks to create a permanent artwork for the docks in the autumn. Michael Pinsky tailors his work for specific locations so they draw people’s attention to unique aspects of the place such as its history, architecture and the people who live and work there. In Bridgwater he is researching and developing the art works with people in the area in the hope of creating something really special. It is hoped that the artwork will attract people to the Docks and provide a boost to regenerate the area. Grants for this work have come from South West Arts, the Regional Arts Lottery Programme and Barclays Bank.

Plans are well in hand to ensure this year’s Somerfest builds on last years success. There will be a wide-ranging choice of entertainment for all tastes and ages. All this will be staged throughout the town over the weekend of 5th - 7th July.

The debut festival was held in July 2001 and more than 55 different shows with 89 separate performances were staged on the streets and at various venues across the town during the three day run. A craft fair is being planned for Saturday 6th July. Enquiries for stalls should be made to the Town Centre Manager as soon as possible. Events like these encourage an increase in footfall to businesses, and attracts people into the town from outside and keeps them here longer.

We are actively seeking sponsors for this years programme and a town centre venue for the official launch on the 14th June. If you can offer support or want further information please contact:
