Recruitment in Somerset

Recruitment of staff across Somerset as well as in Bridgwater Town Centre is recognised as becoming more of an issue in these times of low unemployment. In the town of Bridgwater 544 (Aug 02) people are registered as unemployed, which equates to approximately a 3% unemployment rate. This can be compared with the Somerset 3,885 (1.7%) and South West Regional figures 49,396 (2%) accordingly. You can now see the challenge for all employers from different sectors to recruit staff.

The issue for the smaller retail employers in Bridgwater, is that it has to compete not only with other sectors of employment which invariably may pay higher wages, with less flexibility of labour required, but also with some of the larger supermarkets which may offer higher wages and often better benefits to their to their employees.

Your local Jobcentre can assist you in trying to find the right people. To this end you need to consider what you can afford, what hours you are offering and what training you are prepared to provide. Businesses also need to find out what assistance there is to you as an employer to take on people with no previous experience. And finally, how and where do employers advertise their vacancies, with limited budgets.

To this end the Bridgwater Jobcentre is prepared to provide an employer event to update you on the services available to your business and the financial assistance that can be offered to employers to take on inexperienced staff. If you are interested in attending such an event please contact:

Letter from The House

I think that Bridgwater Town Centre is now beginning to really make progress. It is always a pleasure to walk through Bridgwater and chat to people. Not withstanding the problems that we have had with traffic flow, it is more open and people seem to be moving about more freely, up and down the pavements. The floral displays this year were truly outstanding and have made the Town Centre look very attractive over the last few months.

The Town Centre Partnership have been working hard, things like the big spender promotion with BCR fm, the Blake Gardens Centenary, Heritage Open Day, Jubilee and Somerfest events are important to the town. They attract people in and help give the image of Bridgwater as a town that is prosperous and moving forward. I am always delighted to be able to write a piece for the Town Centre newsletter because I strongly believe that Bridgwater matters a great deal.

We now have a Bridgwater Business Security Group supporting Retail Watch & Pubwatch, Free Retail Training Courses have been organised and of course, we are nearly, dare I mention it, all having to think about Christmas. We need to do all we can to make the town look superb for Christmas. It is important for the shops and other businesses because it brings people in to shop and enjoy themselves over an important period for the town and the businesses in it. We are seeing a slight slow down in the economy and we must all work hard to make sure that it does not impact on the Town Centre. If we can do everything to make this Christmas a great success, I am sure that the year will be seen to have been a very good year for Bridgwater and I look forward to continuing to do what I can to support the town and help it over the festive season.
